Week 16

The dioramas are looking fantastic! The care and attention to detail is a real reflection of how far the children have come in their thinking. K2BeM were keen to make their creations as realistic as possible and have incorporated sand, mud, straw, sticks and, even, stones into their designs!

Next week, the children will be interviewed about their creations and the following questions will be put to them:

*What type of home do you live in?

*Where would I find your home?

*What is your home made of? Why?

*How does where you live shape how you live?

Lastly, the children will be asked to consider “what makes a house a home?” Hopefully, this provocative question will highlight a deeper understanding of the unit.

In Reading Workshop, the children have been exploring various tools that support our reading superpowers, including whisper phones, pointer stickers and, even, glowy rings! Next week, we will take the time to reflect on how far we have come as readers in this unit and to think about and celebrate all the strategies we are now using on a regular basis.

It was wonderful to have the opportunity to work with Matt Glover in our Writing Workshop sessions this week. Matt conducted a Labsite in K2BeM and was very impressed with what he saw! The children were more than happy to share their writing with him in individual conferences and strategy groups. It was certainly a valuable learning experience for the children and teachers. Next week, we will be putting the finishing touches to our pieces before publishing and, again, celebrating our achievements.

It has been a delicious week in Mathematics as the children created their own 3D shapes using marshmallows and toothpicks...they did not last very long! We focused on the relationship between 2D and 3D shapes and comparing the properties of the two. We have also explored how certain shapes can be manipulated to create entirely different shapes, such as six triangles becoming a hexagon.

UN Day on Thursday was a HUGE success. We are so proud of the children and feel each and every one of them did a wonderful job...and we think you all feel the same way too!

The children (and teachers!) also thoroughly enjoyed the delicious food on offer at the Food Festival. Everyone was encouraged to be a risk-taker and try something that they had not tried before. A HUGE thank you must go to everyone who prepared the delicious offerings and manned the stalls all day.

Today's party was a wonderful way to end what has, hopefully, been a very successful first term in K2BeM. We have worked really hard to create a community of learners where everyone feels safe, secure and valued and where learning is a fun and collaborative experience for all. Long may it continue!

Lastly, we will not be sending reading books home next week. Please return all Just Right books to school so that we can take stock and organise everything ready for Term 2.

P.S. Do not forget that next Friday is the last day of Term 1 and school finishes at 11.00am for the Infants.

Have a great weekend.
