We have almost completed interviewing everyone this week about their homes and how where we live shapes how we live. As is the norm in K2BeM, everyone has a lot to say, so it is taking longer than expected! The interviews have sparked some fascinating discussions in and around the classrooms and we are really excited about exploring some of the ideas in more depth over the coming weeks. It has been particularly interesting to see how everyone responded to the questions, "What do you need every day to survive?" and "What do you need every day to be happy?" Food, water and aircon feature quite often!
In Writing Workshop, we have focused on “zooming in” on one small part of a story, paying attention to who, where and what happened as we stretch the moment out across several pages. We have talked about including tiny details that make the story come to life as opposed to just telling the story. A great way to achieve this is to include dialogue and feelings.
In Mathematics, we have continued to focus on comparing objects by length and sorting objects into categories according to length. We have made “Name Towers” with the letters of our names and compared the different lengths of these towers, ordering them from shortest to longest and grouping together any names that are the same length as each other. We have also been collecting and sorting everyday classroom objects into groups according to whether they are longer than, shorter than or the same length as a given object, before recording our findings using simple tables. It has been a really hands-on and minds-on week!
Next week, we will move on to “Geometry,” as we start to think about two-dimensional shapes, looking for and talking about shapes in our environment.
Lastly, a big thank you to Radhika (Devangi's mum) and Sneha (Saanvi's mum) who visited the classroom on Monday to share the story of Diwali with the children and some of the traditions associated with the festival. Everyone enjoyed a variety of experiences including rangoli, decorating diyas and making firework pictures. We also cooked delicious ladoos on Wednesday (Mr. Morley ate five of them!). The celebrations brought a great deal of colour and joy to K2BeM and the experiences were so much more meaningful because they came from you. If you look closely at the photos, you will notice that Ashwin's beautiful rangoli creation now takes pride of place in his home...
A reminder that the Infant Day of Sports is coming up on Wednesday 27th November, with the K2 session running from 8.30-9.30am in Sports Hall 1 and 2. You are all invited to come and join in the fun and find out what the children have been learning in P.E. and, who knows, you might even get to join in!
Also, please put Thursday 5th December in your diaries as this is UN Day across the college. The K2 classes are performing at different times. K2BeM take to the stage at 12.30pm in the auditorium.

Our home models made from recycled materials are looking fantastic and are proudly displayed in the classroom...please come and have a closer look. Later in this unit, we are planning on making dioramas of different homes from around the world and it will be really interesting to compare and contrast our models to these at a later date.

We have also focused on the importance of reading with fluency and expression as we try to “read like a river and not like a robot.” We have tried really hard to think about how we sound when we are reading and what we can do to alter our voice to make it smoother as we move quickly from one word to the next as if we are talking. Making our voices go up when there is a question, sounding excited if there is an exclamation mark or giving your characters a special voice are great ways of making your reading come alive. Of course, recognising punctuation is really helpful when trying to achieve this.
We have also explored choral reading, reading "Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?" as a whole class, first like a river and then like a robot...and comparing how the two different readings sound and which one we prefer.
