It was wonderful that so many of you were able to attend the Writing Workshop Workshare on Tuesday morning. We hope you enjoyed celebrating your child’s achievements in writing and learning more about the structure of a typical workshop session and how the children work independently. The children were so excited about sharing their published pieces with you and we think you will agree that we are certainly all Writers now in K2BeM...and some of you have potential as well!!
Before the break, “The Swimming Pool Challenge” was a fantastic way to end a very successful “Magic Materials” Unit of Study. The children had a wonderful time putting their inventions to the ultimate test...with mixed results! We are busy putting the finishing touches to videos we have created using iMovie to document the whole collaborative process, so, look out for them coming your way soon. The children also enjoyed the opportunity to reflect on the knowledge and the skills they have developed throughout the unit through discussions, writing and other media.
Reflection is a vital component of learning in K2. We want the children to be able to use their learning in meaningful situations instead of coming away with only a superficial understanding of the concepts involved. We have been really impressed with the level of thinking and understanding in K2BeM and have been encouraged by the fact that the children still have so many questions about materials. We hope they will continue inquiring into materials for weeks to come.
Next week, we will begin tuning-in to the next Unit of Study, “Where We Live Shapes How We Live.” Our inquiry will explore the types of homes people live in and different locations. The children will investigate the way different climates and cultures affect people’s perspectives and the way people live and how people’s lives are connected across the world in a range of ways.
Pyjama Day was a great way to end our first weeks together...it made for a very sleepy day in K2BeM!
To keep reading alive over the holidays, please take a photo of your child reading somewhere unusual (under the bed, up a tree, on a train, in the pool...be as inventive as you like!) and send /email it to us to display in the class. Lastly, please send/email a photo of your child's home here in Singapore (I guess this is your home too!) for us to use as a provocation in our upcoming inquiry. It would be great if we could have these for the first week back after the break.
We hope you have a safe and restful break and we look forward to seeing you again in a couple of weeks.
Ben and Ida
P.S. Keep sending in any recyclable materials you have at home!

We enjoyed the story making session and it's quite interesting to see how children organized their thinking to build story complete with pictures..
