This has been an extremely artistic week in K2BeM. If you have not already seen them, you really need to come anc check out our gallery of Laurel Burch inspired cats in the pod...they need to be seen to be believed! The photos do not do them justice...
Did you spot the one that Coco felt inspired to create at home??
We have also created "homes' collages in the style of Hundertwasser. What was particularly impressive was how confidently and independently the children worked on these pieces and the thinking and care they put into their work. Again, they are even more impressive in real life...
We have also now completed our 3D models of our homes using recycled materials. As teachers, we are always looking for opportunities for the children to express themselves and share their understanding in different media and this is a perfect example of one way to do this. Again, the models are on display in the class and, if you need any further explanation, please drop by and ask the creators!
In Reading Workshop, our list of reading superpowers continues to grow by the day! This week, we have focused on using what we already know to help us with our reading. This involves looking for familiar sounds and sound patterns or reading ‘Key Words’ in a snap, as well as ‘chunking.’ This is the idea that if you want to understand a sentence, you have to understand each ‘chunk’ and how it works together with the others to make sense of it. You can not do this if you are simply trying to recognise words. Strong readers have to be able to read and make sense of the chunks, quickly and smoothly. In K2BeM, we are all trying to be “chunky monkeys” at the moment.
In Writing Workshop, we are still focusing on “zooming in” on one small part of a story. At the moment, lots of our stories sound like lists when we read them, so we are really trying hard to include dialogue, emotion and, of course, action to bring our stories to life. This is not as straightforward as it sounds. We are beginning to think about the importance of writing stories that people can really read and how punctuation and clear spacing can help us achieve this. At the same time, we are starting to read our stories back to ourselves as we are writing and asking ourselves, “Does it make sense?”
In Mathematics, we are beginning to explore the size, shape, function and features of familiar two-dimensional shapes, looking for and talking about shapes in our environment and assessing our existing understanding. We have started to think about the properties of shapes and how these can be described and, also, how shapes can be manipulated in imaginative ways to create works of art and suchlike.
As mentioned in the eBrief, our hearts go out to the victims of the typhoon in The Philippines. The UWCSEA East community is coming together to provide support. Initiatives are being organised to support a community effort...
Focus Day-Monday 18th November
All students, and staff are invited to come to school wearing their own clothes in the colours of the Filipino flag in return for a $5 donation. There will be a variety of lunchtime bake sales, activities and stalls that students are running and can participate in. All donations will go to The Philippines and be distributed through UNICEF.
There will also be clothing clothing collections until the end of November, with collection bins near the
Infant School and across the campus.
We are starting to get excited about our trip to Kampong Buangkok on Tuesday 26th November. A big thank you to everyone who volunteered...when we have everyone's slips back, we will put all the names in a hat and draw out four. We will then be in touch with the lucky few...please do not be too disappointed if you do not make it this time, there will be other opportunities later in the year.
Lastly, as you know, we have lots of "buddies" in K2BeM. We meet regularly with our friends in 3AnH to share and celebrate reading, we have worked with the Middle School students and visited the High School on several occasions this term. We now have another very special buddy in K2BeM...David. David is in G12 and is a boarder here at UWCSEA...and, so, David is our "Boarder Buddy!" David came to meet us the other day and shared stories of his family home in Indonesia. We even interviewed him to find out how where he has lived has shaped his life. We hope to meet up with him more over the course of the year...but he is very busy!!
Reminders:
*Infant Day of Sports-Wednesday 27th November-8.30-9.30am in Sports Hall 1 and 2-Please come and join in the fun!
*Un Day-Thursday 5th December-12.30pm K2BeM, K2ANa and K2AvS
Have a great weekend.
