Week 12 Term 2

On Wednesday we celebrated the inaugural K2 “Reused Material Hat Day.” The creativity and imagination on display was truly outstanding and the children did a fantastic job. The myriad reused materials was testament to how creative the children have become in their reuse of materials...including plastic bottles, plastic bags, cardboard, tin foil, egg cartons, newspaper and, even, a disposable beer keg! We all got together to enjoy each other’s creations in a colourful parade and we definitely believe we raised awareness of ‘the 3 R’s’ across the school as everyone kept asking us about our hats! We think we might just do it all again next year. 

After the break, we will introduce our latest Unit of Study, “Arts Festival,” which, if everything goes to plan, will culminate in a wonderful, collaborative performance on Friday 9th May. Fingers crossed…

To help us tune-in to this unit, we were lucky enough to be invited to watch the Arts Festival Dress Rehearsal by our K2 friends at Dover. It was a wonderful show and the children were a perfect audience. We will use this as a starting point when we begin to unpack the elements of a performance and the ways of expressing yourself through the Arts.

Spirit Day was a great way to end the term and celebrate the unique sense of community we have here at UWCSEA. There were lots of different sports and sporting heroes and the children really enjoyed explaining their outfits to each other.

In Writing Workshop, the children finished fancying up their edited pieces and completing front covers ready for publishing. As with all our units, we will keep one or two published pieces for the Portfolios and the rest of the writing will come home for you to enjoy. After the break, we will move on to our fifth unit where we will explore “Persuasive Writing.”

In Reading Workshop, the children have been celebrating just how far they have come in terms of reading with fluency and expression. It was really interesting to compare and contrast group readings from the start and end of the unit and see just how much we have developed in this area. Of course, we are hoping to take many of these new skills and strategies with us into our next Reading Workshop unit which also starts after the holiday. In this unit, we will explore how “Readers Get to Know Characters.”

We are looking forward to sharing some of our favourite Mathematics rotations with you at the Workshares, where we will, hopefully, show you how we are developing more and more efficient strategies to solve addition and subtraction problems...and we might even let you join in! At the same time, we will also begin tuning-in to our next unit, “Data Handling and Probability.”
