This week, we have spent a lot of time thinking about those less fortunate than ourselves. Monday’s Focus Day was, hopefully, a meaningful way for the children to be involved in discussions about and reflections on the tragic events in the Philippines last week. As a school, we raised a considerable amount of money for the cause but, more importantly, the conversations in and around K2BeM highlighted a genuine sense of empathy and a “Commitment to Care." It was particularly pleasing to hear stories of K2BeM children carrying on this support in their own time.
Thanks to all of you who have purchased items for The Giving Tree. PLEASE do tell your child when enough is enough and you do not want them to bring back any more labels!
In our Unit of Study sessions this week, the children have continued researching how location and climate can shape how we live. Working in pairs, they sorted and grouped a large collection of photographs of articles of clothing and everyday artefacts from different countries. Firstly, they were invited to try and name and identify the different objects before sorting them according to their own criteria and explaining their reasoning. From here, they were encouraged to sort the articles according to whether people might use them on a daily basis in a hot location, a cold location or both and, again, they were encouraged to expand on their thinking. Lastly, the children were then tasked with matching homes from around the world with the different photographs. This prolonged activity afforded some fascinating and very revealing conversations across the class.
Over the last couple of weeks of this unit, we would like the children to create dioramas of different homes from around the world. In order to do this, we will need an empty cereal or shoe box from everyone as soon as possible. It would be great if we could have these all in on Monday so that we can make a start...feel free to send in more than one box if you have them.
We have had loads of fun in Reading Workshop this week creating different character voices and trying them out on each other. We have also focused on punctuation and how recognising punctuation marks can help your read more fluently and allow you become a more expressive reader.
In Writing Workshop, we are almost ready to move on to the "revision" stage of the Writing Cycle. In fact, we have been thinking about how to make our writing easier to read. Now that we all see ourselves as writers, we are able to start to think more about some of the writing conventions and try to accommodate these in our work. We have looked at the importance of clear spacing between words, well sized and formed handwriting, incorporating simple and familiar sound patterns and, of course, spelling words correctly.
In Mathematics, we have continued to explore 2D shapes. We have focused on developing the language and vocabulary to describe and compare shapes and their attributes. The children have worked with the Geoboards and rubber bands, clay (what a mess!) and plastic shapes, manipulating them to suit their needs. They have also been sorting shapes according to their properties and trying to create their own 2D shapes using dot paper, which is a lot trickier than it sounds.
Lastly, a big THANK YOU for your continued support with cooking in K2BeM. Ida and I know all too well how much organisation and effort goes into making these sessions run so smoothly and successfully and it is genuinely appreciated by us and the children. Everyone really looks forward to Wednesday mornings in the kitchen and it has been really great to see so many different parents involved over the weeks...and each week's creations have been delicious! This week's dumplings were no exception.
